INTEGRATED TOURISM AS A TOOL FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
On the eve of the ongoing Tourism Indaba in Durban, the Minister for Tourism of South Africa hosted an African Ministers Tourism session, to discuss INTEGRATED TOURISM AS A TOOL FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.The discussions emphasized the need for increased commitment from all African countries in implementing their bilateral and multilateral Tourism agreements.
This, they noted, will lead to the development of basic infrastructure and regulatory frameworks which will facilitate tourism in the region and the continent as a whole.
In attendance were Tourism Ministers from Angola, The kingdom of Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Uganda,Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Uganda stall stood out as an attraction to delegates at the African tourism Indaba in Durban.
Among the distinguished visitors was Mr. DerekHanekom marveled at the beauty of Uganda, the undulating hills in theSouth West of the country as well as its expansive flora and fauna mostespecially the mountain gorilla with which he took a memorable photograph.
He promised,at an opportune time to visit Uganda the Pearl of Africa.

UGANDA AND SOUTH AFRICA COMMIT TO BOOST TOURISM
On the sidelines of the Africa Travel Indaba 7-10 May 2018, the Minister for Tourism Hon Ephraim Kamuntu held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Derek Andre Hanekom Minister for Tourism of South Africa.
Among other things the two Ministers appreciated the new visa exemption regime for holders of diplomatic and official passports from the two countries. They hoped that further negotiation will lead to this facility being extended to all citizens from both countries as it will go along way in promoting tourism,trade and investment between both countries.
Hon. Ephraim Kamuntu took opportunity to invite his counterpart to visit Uganda to view source of the mighty R.Nile as well as track the famous mountain gorillas, 54% of which reside in Western Uganda. Mr. Derek Andre Hanekom accepted the invitation.
He also invited his colleague Minister to attend the Tourism Trade Show, similar to the ongoing Tourism Indaba,slated to take place in Kampala in Feb 2019(actual date to be communicated).
The meeting was also attended by H.E Nekesa Barbara and Mr.Julius J.Kivuna, High Commissioner and Minister Councellor from the Uganda High Commission-Pretoria.

In a bid to promote more Trade and Investment opportunities from South Africa to Uganda,H. E. Barbara Nekesa Oundo made a presentation from the Uganda Investment Authority of the Bankable Projects to potential Investors and officials from WESGRO The Western Cape Investment and Trade and Promotion Agency which is the official Investment and Trade promotion agency for the Western Cape.
Her presentation centered on the number of Trade incentives offered by Uganda providing a conducive and enabling environment for Business to thrive and meaningful contribute to the development and growth of the Uganda which enjoys a unique location at the heart of Sub-Saharan Africa within the East African region and lies astride the equator.
The Priority Sectors for Investment include
Commercial Agriculture and Agro processing
Adding Value to Minerals
Information Communication Technology (ICT)
Tourism
Pharmaceuticals
Other viable investment opportunities that can be explored are in Services,Education, Finance, and Health.
H.E AMB. BARBARA NEKESA OUNDO , , PRESENTED COPIES OF HER LETTERS OF CREDENCE TO HON. PROF PAUL V MAVIMA, AG. MINISTER
Hon. Prof Paul V Mavima, Ag. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the republicof Zimbabwe while receiving copies of the letters of credence from BarbaraNekesa O, a non resident Ambassador Designate of Uganda to Zimbabwe, called forcloser economic and political cooperation between Zimbabwe and Uganda.
The minister then welcomed Amb. Nekesa to Zimbabwe and wished her a successful tour of duty.
In response, the Amb. Conveyed best wishes fromPresident Museveni and the people of Uganda at large.
She then promised to work together with thegovernment of Zimbabwe to further strengthen the already existing strongrelations between the two countries both politically and most importantlyeconomically.
The Ambassador was accompanied by Mr. Wamono David,2nd secretary at Uganda High Commission-Pretoria.
THE UGANDA MARTYRS DAY COMMEMORATED FOR THE 3RD TIME IN SOUTH AFRICA ON 16 / 6 / 2018.
The Uganda Martyrs day was commemorated for the 3rd time in South Africa on the 16th June 2018.The commemoration was held at St. Anthony Church in Johannesburg.
Holly Mass to commemorate the occasion was led by Bishop Duncan Tsoke, the Auxiliary Bishop Victor Phalana of Klerksdorp of North West province plus other clergy. The Homily for the day was delivered by Fr. Joseph Ruzindana, the National Youth Chaplain-Uganda.
Mr. Julius.J.Kivuna accompanied by Brig. General Etyang and Mr. Wamono David represented the Uganda High Commission-Pretoria at the function
THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA SIGNED AN AGREEMENT ON VISA EXEMPTION 4 / 4 / 2018.
The Government of the Republic of Uganda and the Government of the Republic of South Africa signed and exchanged an Agreement on Visa Exemption for holders of Diplomatic and Official passports. The Acting High Commissioner, Uganda High Commission- Pretoria, Julius Joshua Kivuna signed on Uganda's behalf, while the Government of South Africa was represented by Mr.Cecil Sols, Director of International Relations in the Department of Home Affairs. The Agreement, among other things, permits holders of valid Diplomatic and Official passports to enter, sojourn and exit the country of the other party of which they are not citizens for periods of ninety(90) days from the date of entry without having to obtain visas. The Agreement will come into effect thirty ( 30)days after signing.
UGANDA AND SOUTH AFRICA STRENGTHEN BI-LATERAL TRADE RELATIONS
Hon Amelia Anne Kyambadde Minister of Trade , Industry & Co -operatives of the Republic of Uganda today met with Hon. Gratitude Magwanishe Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry of the Republic of South Africa for the 2nd Joint Trade Committee Meeting ( JTC ).
Both Ministers pledged to continue maintaining such platforms for not only exchange of ideas but utilise this pivotal forums for improving the Implementation of the Policies and Intiatives to ultimately achieve development in identified areas of common interest.
In a bid to further promote the already vibrant Trade relations between both countries, Hon. Amelia called for the reciprocal promotion and protection of Investment opportunities to address issues of Trade imbalance with Uganda.
Hon. Gratitude Magwanishe underscored South Africa's commitment to maintaining and improving the already vibrant relations between both countries agreeing that Uganda needs to work harder in improving exports to South Africa and that this Session of the JTC platform should effectively be utlilised for this purpose.
In review of the Progress made since the 1st Joint Trade Committee ( JTC) held in 2002, the following areas where discussed in depth;
1) Cooperation between the Industrial Development Cooperation (IDC) of SouthAfrica, Uganda Development Coporation (UDC) & Uganda Development Bank Limited (UDBL). IDC has trained a number of staff aiming at capacity building.
2) Cooperation between the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of South Africa and the Uganda Research Institute ( UIRI). Both signed a cooperation agreement in 2011 and in May 2012 a Project Specific Agreement was signed to commence the Essential Oil Project in Uganda jointly run by both Insitutes.
3)Cooperation between the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and the Uganda National Bureau of Standards cooperating under an MoU arrangement highlighting standards development, conformity assessment, certification.
4) Cooperation between Trade Investment South Africa (TISA) and the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) to cooperate on the promotion of Trade and Investment between both countries specifically in Tourism, Agro processing, Mining and Mineral beneciation, oil and gas , pharmaceuticals, infrastructure development and services.
This meeting was preceded the Technical Officials Meeting led by Amb. Julius ONEN Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade , Industry & Coperatives and Officials from UDC, UIRI from Uganda and Ms. Lerato Mataboge the Ag CEO of TIA as well as other Officials from the Department of Trade and Industry of South Africa.
The Meeting concluded on a cordial note with both parties, Uganda and South Africa agreeing to effectively and timely implementing on what was deliberated upon
